Too many times people equate being spiritual with being weird. You know the ones that I am talking about – you can tell they are spiritual because you can’t understand a word they say and there is an air of spirituality that you think you should have. They live, breath and talk ‘godly’ things but they can’t have a normal conversation.
But is this the example we see in the Bible?
I believe that Jesus was radically different. I believe that Christians should be different from the world also. Too many times they are not and it can often be a kick-back against not wanting to be irrelevant or super-spiritual. This is a wrong way of thinking and is used as an excuse for an unchanged life.
Jesus was different but He was not weird. Luke 12:37 tells us ‘…the common people heard him gladly’.
The religious leaders didn’t like Him because He was not ‘religious’ enough but the common people heard Him gladly – they were drawn to His life and therefore what He had to say.
Are people attracted to us as people? Do they want to listen to what we have to say because they can tell we are real? Or do we talk in such ‘super-spiritual’ language that the common people cannot even understand us? Do we have an air of spirituality about us that makes us feel superior or do people feel valued and loved around us?
God’s people are to follow Jesus’ example. That example was to be different but not weird. This is true spirituality. |
