Only one God has stood the test of time. Only one God has not changed. Only one God is real. The society we live in may have (on the whole) rejected all religions, and may seem to be intellectually sound, but as humans we were created to worship and one way or another we end up worshipping something.
The ancient nation of Israel was taught by the Lord not to look to other gods, not to worship planets or animals or the elements, and He blessed them when they obeyed. Other nations around them in their ignorance of God and the shallowness of human thinking were easily drawn to man-made or other created things to worship.
So what has changed? In several thousand years of human history, what has changed?
Human thinking has evolved so much that now we understand the elements, we understand the created world around us so we no longer (outwardly) worship them. It’s hard to worship something that you can fully comprehend and manipulate.
The world will end up worshipping itself, the image of God. Whether consciously through the dominant pop culture, or whether more subtly through selfish and willful living. By “rejecting” all religions, the world makes a religion out of itself.
But we cannot fully comprehend or manipulate God. Only God is large enough to exhaust our capacity to understand. Only God is big enough to capture our imagination, and recapture it every moment of everyday.
And yet, God has not changed. He still desires to be in relationship with us. He is still full of love; He still wants to lead you into the amazing life He has planned for you. He still does miracles; He still holds the universe in His hands.
Be encouraged today to lift up your eyes, to open up your heart to the only one who has the capacity to take all of your burdens, to take all of your cares, to carry them all away and replace it with garments of joy, and peace, and hope. God and God alone, the unchanging one, can nourish your soul, not just give you hope, but a reason to believe that hope.
