People chattering, the wheels of trolleys, the bustling of caring angels in white uniforms and that most distinctive smell that cannot be found anywhere but in a hospital.
Looks of concern, whispers between loved ones with furrowed brow and the constant glance at a watch face that never seems to change. Hospitals can be anxious places.
Margaret is having a cyst removed from her back and I sit surrounded yet in quiet solitude within. Although not at all serious, it is enough for my sanguine personality to feel deeply for her at this time.
My Friend and Comforter, the Holy Spirit, is communing with me in our secret pavilion that seems to cause the bustle to blur and all thoughts of concern to drop away.
The last two days I have spoken to a friend whose wife was going in for a brain scan, spoke to a minister who had just lost his wife to cancer and now I sit in the cafeteria of the Casey Hospital whilst waiting for Margaret to come out of surgery.
So I thought I would share my waiting time thoughts with you.
Many and diverse are the religions and philosophies that seek to give to mankind the capacity to deal with life successfully. Yet, with them all, the prescription is more deadly than the ailment it seeks to address. Scientology is one much in the news these days.
Man has a craving to discover inner peace in the midst of the storm.
Friends, to this peace-hungry, strife worn world of seeking people, there is no greater signpost to Jesus that the witness of a soul in adversity that walks with an unconquerable inner peace.
That is the miracle of the indwelling Holy Spirit. He can radiate an unshakeable peace in the midst of the darkest night, the most troubling of storms. As the waves lash and the winds howl, if you will stop and listen, you will hear that inner command of The King: “Peace be still”.
Our peace is not based upon understanding, nor circumstances improving; it comes from a deep inner conviction that the Master over all storms walks with us and that His Spirit is within us. It is an unreasonable peace, it is an illogical peace, and its power to hold us secure is quite supernatural.
Should we look for trials to prove the point? Absolutely not. But when they do come, remember this short word and surrender to the Holy Spirit’s loving embrace. In that moment your storm will fade and your peace be assured. The whole world craves for what you and I already possess: a supernatural source of inner peace. What a priceless gift the Holy Spirit is to each of us.
The secret is to cultivate such a daily, intimate, conversational relationship with Him that reference to Him in such times of challenge is not a discipline but an instinct. He is so deeply desirous of being your Strength, because of His great love for you. Your conversation with Him allows Him to be that.
It’s about time for me to finish my coffee now and get back to waiting for Margaret to come back to the ward. Thank you for allowing me to share these moments with you.
Your friend,
David
