The priority of our prayer reveals the priority of our hearts so when the disciples in Matthew 6 ask Jesus, “How should we pray?” they were asking for far more than a prayer formula. They were asking for God’s primary burden so that they, in turn, could pray with that priority in mind.
The answer of Jesus is in Matthew 6:9-10 “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. (The priority of God’s heart.) Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” “Hallowed be your Name” is not prayer, it is worship. Therefore the first thing on that prayer list was the Kingdom.
It was the priority of Jesus and it was to become the priority of His disciples. Pray, seek, cry out, for the Kingdom to come to be made manifest. Preach the Kingdom. Demonstrate the Kingdom in order that His will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Only via His “Kingdom” can His will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. It was the top of the prayer list because it was the top of God’s priority list – AND IT STILL IS!
Now, today there is great controversy over “The Kingdom”. But when you study what Jesus actually commanded us, in its simplicity, there is a complete removal of that controversy. Whenever Jesus urged our attention to be upon the Kingdom, He used a specific word.
That word coming to us through the Greek language is the word ‘basilea’ – literally meaning: “rule/authority”, “the authority to rule over”.
So, what Jesus commanded them to pray and long after was: “Father, Your authority to rule over be made manifest so that your will can be done on Earth just as it is in Heaven.”
Friends, how is the will of God done in the Heavens? Absolutely! His declared will on a matter is not the invitation to a debate or a committee meeting, it is a reality the minute He breathes it. That is the way He wants here in the reality of our own environment.
What an awesome thought! That such would be our faith and obedience that as soon as the Holy Spirit breathes the thought of Gods intention into our minds, we would be instant in the moment of that obedience. It is my conviction that if that was so, the miraculous would be a consistent and ongoing part of our lives and the lives of those to whom we minister.
Over the next few weeks, I want to share with you thoughts about Kingdom authority and how it is developed and outworked in our lives. Should you at any time want the fuller study on this matter, please see our Resources for “Overcomers: Born to Rule”.
